The air gap in a water supply system is the unobstructed vertical distance through the open atmosphere between the lowest opening from any pipe or faucet supplying water to a tank or plumbing fixture and the flood level rim of the receptor. The minimum required air gap shall be twice the diameter of the effective opening. The effective opening is the minimum cross sectional area at the point of water supply discharge, control port or of the supply pipe, whichever is less. It is measured in terms of the diameter of a circle or if the opening is not circular, the diameter of a circle or equivalent cross sectional area.
